ABOUT ME
After recording the stories and lived experiences of my family through one of the most significant points in East African history, I gained a deep appreciation for my roots and its influence on where I am today. Now, my mission is to encourage others to realise the same.
BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE
& Life in Review
- Born in London to East African Indian parents who met in the UK
- 11+ years experience working in International Partnership roles at global companies
- Lived in Shanghai, China, for 2 years working at international and local startups
- Specialised in cross-cultural communication, giving workshops to executives, coaches and teachers based in China
- Travelled to over 55 countries
- Conducted in-person interviews for Faith Matters, to document the lives of South Asians who were forced to leave Uganda during the 1972 expulsion.
- I began ‘The Journey Onwards’ podcast in Jan 2021 to connect with family members during lockdown, and gather their personal stories and experiences of growing up in Uganda before moving to the UK
- I evolved the podcast to ‘Roots to Routes’ to focus on the importance and relevance of heritage and culture in influencing our identity, life perspectives, and purpose
"When we explore our heritage, it's not only about an appreciation for our ancestors' journeys, but it also gives us a sense of identity and clarity about our own path forward and the legacy we might want to leave behind."
The Story Behind the Podcast
Growing up in London, I’ve always been surrounded by a diversity of cultures.
I was raised in an Indian household, but my parents were born in East Africa. This wasn’t anything uncommon where I grew up in. Like others who share my heritage, my parents’ lives changed dramatically because of the 1972 Ugandan expulsion, where they were forced to leave and rebuild their lives. If it wasn’t for this historical moment, their life and my own would have looked completely different.
I started ‘The Journey Onwards’ podcast, recording their stories and lived experience through one of the most significant points in East African history. As they shared memories of life in East Africa and the challenges of starting over in the UK, their resilience and determination gave me a deeper appreciation for my heritage and understanding of where I’ve come from.
Now evolved into ‘Roots to Routes’, I host conversations with diverse guests – from founders and entrepreneurs, to creatives, and innovators – who share how their backgrounds have shaped their values and the work they do now.
Through these conversations, the mission is to uncover the lessons passed down through generations, exploring the connection between culture, identity, and personal growth.
